About the Department

From very humble beginning as an outpatient department from the polyclinic of Sector 22 in the year 1993, the department of orthopaedics has grown into a nationally renowned centre of excellence providing state of art services. The outdoor patient complex provides single point comprehensive outdoor services with a plaster room, dressing room, injection room and minor operation theatre in the outpatient department itself.

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy wings of department provide all kind of services to outdoor and indoor patients from all the specialities. There are separate operation theatres for the emergency and elective surgeries.  The well designed orthopaedic operation theatres are equipped with state of art equipments such as laminar airflow, operating microscope, navigation system for computer assisted surgery, bone bank, blood freezer, C arms, arthroscopy systems , high speed burr system and different instrumentation sets. The department performed more than 4000 major surgeries and attended to 70000 outpatients and approximately 16000 emergency patients in the preceding year.  

The department is one of the few in public sector in India that has endeavoured to set up a high quality subspecialty service. As a result, the department has emerged as a referral centre in the fields of musculoskeletal oncology and adult reconstruction, arthroplasty, sports medicine, hand surgery, paediatric orthopaedics and deformity correction, spinal disorders and complex osteoarticular and pelvi-acetabular trauma. The department is served by 8 consultants each of which caters to a chosen subspecialty. Teaching and research is a vital part of the activities of the department. Training positions in the department are highly coveted and currently there are 14 senior residents and 27 post graduate students besides clinical fellows who join from time to time. The department has organized numerous national, regional and state level conferences, live surgery workshops besides numerous training workshops. The department has more than 150 research publications in several international, national and regional level journals. 

The faculty is regularly invited for guest lectures, live surgery programmes and as training workshop faculty all over India. The residents and postgraduate students have consistently won quiz competitions and bagged best paper awards in various national and regional conferences. All the faculty of the department has endeavoured to gain advanced exposure and has been very active in seeking fellowships and short term observerships to international centres of excellence. It has been a constant and unstinting effort to replicate the best practices in GMCH. To conclude, department of Orthopaedics is one of the most advanced Centres of Orthopaedics nationally recognized for outstanding orthopaedic care and innovative research catering to patients not only from Chandigarh but also from Punjab, Haryana Himachal Pradesh, U.P., J& K and Uttarakhand.

It is our great pleasure to announce the 10th Annual conference of Indian Musculoskeletal Oncology Society to be held in Chandigarh, from 8th-10th March 2024. IMSOS has evolved into one of the larger oncology societies in the country with members from all states. This conference will be a wonderful opportunity for orthopaedic oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists to interact and share a wealth of knowledge in the form of workshops, lectures, free paper sessions, symposia and presentations on recent advances. The conference will reinforce and foster the IMSOS mission to promote the art of oncology at a national level for the improvement of patient care, development of research and to facilitate the exchange of professional experience.
